MPEG-4 Part 14 or MP4 is a digital multimedia container format most commonly used to store video and audio, but it can also be used to store other data such as subtitles and still images. Like most modern container formats, it allows streaming over the Internet. The only filename extension for MPEG-4 Part 14 files as defined by the specification is .mp4. MPEG-4 Part 14 (formally ISO/IEC 14496-14:2003) is a standard specified as a part of MPEG-4.

What is the MP4 format? MP4, or MPEG-4 Part 14, is a media container format that stores video, audio, subtitles, and images, normally in a .mp4 file extension. As for the popularity, MP4 is the only game in town, and to some extent, is a pretty well-educated guess in every single regard: itself (best balance of size and quality), powerful x264 encoder, compatibility with portable devices, and the rise of streaming service. Keep reading if you wanna know deeper about the MP4 format and everything related to MP4.

MP4 ( MPEG-4 Part 14) is a digital multimedia container format designed to store video, audio, subtitles, still images, text, and other data. To make it more clear: e.g. MP4 container (.mp4) = MP4 format video (H.264 codec) + audio + subtitle. MP4 files are not video compression format and can contain H.264 video, MP3, or AAC for audio, or other types of video and audio codecs. MP4 is based on the QuickTime File Format and MPEG-4 Part 12(Version 1) released in 2001. The most recent release, ISO/IEC 14496-14:2020, MPEG-4 Part 14, was released in 2020.

The MPEG-4 Part 14 was originally extended from MPEG-4 Part 12 based on QuickTime MOV in 2001. MPEG-4 Part 14 videos officially are with the .mp4 extension. So MPEG-4 Part 12 files also refer to MP4 videos. However, there are some MPEG-4 files using .m4p, .m4a, or .m4p extensions, as well.

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities! I understand that you're having trouble saving .mp4 videos to your iPhone. Nice work isolating the issue to only occurring with the videos which were shot vertically.

MPEG-4 Part 14 or MP4 is a digital multimedia format most commonly used to store video and audio, but can also be used to store other data such as subtitles and still images. MP4 allows streaming over the Internet. The only official filename extension for MPEG-4 Part 14 files is .mp4, but many have other extensions, most commonly .m4a and .m4p.

When inspecting sample.mp4 file's binary data using any Hex Viewer, like Active@ Disk Editor we can see it starts with a signature ftyp (hex: 66 74 79 70) at offset 4, which defines QuickTime Container File Type.

The existence of two different file extensions for naming audio-only MP4 files has been a source of confusion among users and multimedia playback software. Since MPEG-4 Part 14 is a container format, MPEG-4 files may contain any number of audio, video, and even subtitle streams, making it impossible to determine the type of streams in an MPEG-4 file based on its filename extension alone. In response, Apple Inc. started using and popularizing the .m4a file extension. Software capable of audio/video playback should recognize files with either .m4a or .mp4 file extensions, as would be expected, as there are no file format differences between the two. Most software capable of creating MPEG-4 audio will allow the user to choose the filename extension of the created MPEG-4 files.

MP4(short for MPEG-4 Part 14) is a file format based on ISO/IEC 14496-12:2004 that is based on QuickTime File Format but formally specifies support for Initial Object Descriptors (IOD) and other MPEG features. It is mostly used to store video and audio but can also be used to store subtitles and still images. MP4 files are stored with the .mp4 extension. MP4 is an international audio-visual coding standard. Similar to most modern container formats, MP4 supports streaming over the internet. Due to the high compression used in MP4, the resultant files are smaller in size with almost all the original quality retained.

Paraphrased from the former www.m4a.com site: MP4 can be used for MPEG 4 video files, combined video and audio files, or just plain MPEG 4 audio. M4A files contain only MPEG 4 Audio. Apple started using M4A to identify files unprotected by digital rights management; note that protected QTA_AAC files carry the M4P and and M4B (for bookmarkable files) extensions. Apple felt that MP4 was too general (video, video/audio, or audio) and might confuse some media players. Until recently, encoder and player software like Nero and Compaact used .mp4 for audio files while WinAmp 5.02, Apple iTunes, and others used .m4a. Today, most audio software developers allow you to choose the file extension you prefer.

MP4 seems like the most popular video format used everywhere in our digital life. You might see videos stored in .mp4 files from digital cameras, smartphones, online video platforms, and so forth. But do you know what MP4 is on earth? Why it is so popular?

Generally, the default media player will play it in no time when you double-click on a .mp4 file on your computer or tap the video on your iPhone, Android phone, or tablet. In addition to QuickTime Player and Windows Media Player, you can open MP4 videos with VLC media player, 5KPlayer, as well as MP4 video editors.

For some reason whenever I export my video to an MP4 format (H.246), the export will either take 5+ hours (for a 20 minute video) or it will take 15 minutes (same exact work area). In both cases I end up with an unreadable .mp4 file and an additional .m4v file (no clue why this suddenly gets created, it never has before), but in the latter case (when it only takes 15 minutes to export), the output file is only about 24 bytes.

CONFIRMED WORK AROUND! The .m4v file gets created while encoding, but Adobe Media Encoder does not re-pack it back into the .mp4 unless you select the "Export Audio" in Adobe Premier export prior to queuing. If you don't want audio, mute the individual tracks and still export audio.

If your file does not automatically open, you can download the free, cross-platform software VLC media player, follow the instructions to associate the program with the .mp4 file extension, and you should be able to open and play your files then.

The MPEG-4 Part 14 (MP4) is one of the most common container formats for video and has an extension of .mp4. You may already know of other container formats, such as wav, mov, mp3 or more recently webm. A container just "contains" the video or audio track, or both. It can also support embedded subtitle tracks too. 041b061a72
